Sway immerses viewers in a real-time psychological freefall as it follows a respected Black community leader whose meticulously structured life unravels in a single day. When his brother mysteriously disappears, cracks in his controlled world begin to spread. Within hours, he is blackmailed by a stranger, implicated in a murder, and forced to confront the limits of his morality as he fights to protect the people he loves.

Written and co-directed by Charlie Hamilton, alongside co-director Zachary Ramelan, Sway explores the razor-thin line between stability and collapse. Its compressed time structureunfolding over one chaotic, high-stakes dayhas long been a hallmark of Hamiltons storytelling. Most of my stories work best when we can follow a unique character through a messy odyssey, Hamilton says. I like sweeping the audience up in a wave of something unique and new, and carrying them miles downstream before the credits roll.

The films festival journey has been equally impressive, earning widespread acclaim for Emmanuel Kabongos intense, deeply layered performance. Kabongo has received multiple Best Actor awards, including honors from the Toronto International Nigerian Film Festival, Hollywood North Film Awards, Canadian Black Screen Awards, International Black and Diversity Film Festival, and The Black Film Summit in Chicago.

Visually and emotionally, the film mirrors its protagonists unraveling psyche. We lit, shot, and scored the film in sync with Sways emotional state, Hamilton notes. The team leaned into horror-inspired sound design to pull audiences into more unsettling terrain. Theres something dark that happens when youre watching a drama and suddenly the score turns horror, he adds.

A key line in the film (The secret to lying is including as much of the truth as possible) served as an early compass for the filmmakers, guiding the storys slippery relationship with reality. Hamilton and Ramelan resisted simple archetypes, opting instead for a morally murky world where every character operates in shades of gray.

For Hamilton and Ramelan, both first-time feature filmmakers, Sway represents a debut shaped by risk, instinct, and deep creative trust. Charlie anchored us in story and character while I explored the film as a first-time viewer, Ramelan says. We filled each others blind spots.

Asked what lesson theyll carry into their next project, Hamilton laughs: Have financing figured out before post-production.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, making it a great time to look at this serious issue and what can be done to combat it. One organization, Stand for the Silent, is working with multiple groups to help prevent youth suicide, and they are offering ways for others to get involved to do the same. The more people come together to address this issue, the more effective we will be as a society in helping to protect our youth from the perils that face our nations youth.

"This is such an important topic that we must come together to address it, says Kirk Smalley, co-founder of Stand for the Silent. "Our youth depend on us working together to help address the issue. I encourage everyone to get involved, join together, and do what they can to help address bullying and youth suicide, which are closely related.

Smalley is no stranger to this topic. He founded Stand for the Silent after his 11-year-old son committed suicide following being bullied. It's a situation he never wants other families to experience, and he has made it his mission to help raise awareness, provide tools, and do what he can to address the problem that is plaguing kids around the country.

According to the National Institutes of Health, rates of preteen suicide (ages 8-12) have been increasing by 8% per year since 2008. While this is less than the teen suicide rates, it is alarming and demonstrates how serious this growing problem is. It's now impacting even elementary-age children. For teens ages 15-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports the suicide rate remains steady, following a 57% increase between 2001 and 2009.

Bullying is at the root of many cases of young people who commit suicide. Its an issue that experience as they grow up. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bullying is widespread in the country, and harms youth. Bullying is experienced in a variety of ways, including physical, verbal, social, and even cyberbullying, which is carried out on electronic devices. The CDC reports that around 28% of middle school students, 15% of high school students, and 10% of elementary students are bullied at least once per week. Cyberbullying instances tend to be even more frequent. The bullying is linked to youth becoming stressed, depressed, and often suicidal.

One of the most effective ways to address this crucial issue is to bring together forces within the community. As such, Stand for the Silent has created partnerships and is expanding access to suicide prevention resources, offering practical tips and tools for parents, teachers, and students. The resources they provide include downloadable guides, school toolkits, and community engagement strategies designed to help adults recognize warning signs, foster open conversations, and connect young people with the support they need. Each year, the organization also travels the country, visiting schools and communities to hold assemblies regarding bullying and help create a community of support that rises against it.

They have collaborations with schools, civic organizations, MMA fighters (including Irann Orozco and Trey Anderson), and music talents, such as Nacho and Ciscoh, to help amplify the mission of saving young lives. The collaborations will enable them to reach a wider audience and offer more helpful tools. They aim to connect young people with the support and resources they need.

Balfour Communities Host Dementia Training for Louisville Fire and EMS

Louisville, CO (August 21, 2025)- Balfour Cherrywood Village Memory Care, a Kisco Collection, recently hosted a dementia training series for the Louisville Fire and EMS Department. In partnership with Balfour Louisville and Balfour Longmont, the training was designed to help first responders more effectively engage with individuals living with dementia during a crisis.

Seeing the staffs deep caring compassion for their residents made it easy to engage with the training, said Elizabeth Chase, Louisville firefighter-paramedic. They gave us simple yet incredibly helpful tips on how to interact with dementia patients and bring them the best possible care.

The training included a presentation that guided first responders on how to appropriately approach, communicate with, and assist individuals with dementia. It was highly conversational, hands-on and practical, covering a variety of real-life scenarios and proven methods. First responders also experienced the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT), an immersive, scientifically developed method that simulates the sensory and cognitive changes associated with dementia.

Thank you to our community partners at Balfour for teaching our Louisville firefighters strategies to improve their interactions with people with dementia, said Shawn Stark, chief of EMS. Our crews came away from the training with a better understanding and empathy for this unique patient population. The training was engaging and interactive, but we were equally impressed by the obvious devotion and advocacy shown by the Balfour staff toward the people who live in their senior communities.

The partnership between Balfour communities and the Louisville Fire and EMS department is a unique and valuable offering that sets these communities apart. Balfour Communities are

committed to strengthening this partnership and plan to host additional dementia training sessions in the future.

Mike Maimone to Debut New Music at The Mint in Los Angeles on September 16

On Monday, September 16, out singer-songwriter Mike Maimone will return to the stage for a powerful, full-band performance at The Mint in Los Angeles. It will be his first live show since the passing of his husband, legendary publicist and LGBTQ+ advocate Howard Bragman.

The night will be a deeply personal one for Maimone, who will debut Forever Again, an emotional ballad written for Bragman to celebrate their engagement and the love they shared. Originally penned to soothe fears about starting over after both had experienced past relationship trauma, the song took on even greater resonance after Bragmans death in 2023. Maimone now calls it a vital part of our story.

Taking the stage at 8:25 PM, Maimone will be joined by a powerhouse lineup of musicians, including De'Mar Hamilton (Plain White T's) on drums and Marc Walloch (Beck, AWOLNATION, Company of Thieves) on bass. Doors open at 7 PM.

Forever Again, the fifth single from Maimones upcoming album Guess What? I Love You, will be officially released on August 15. Laguna Niguel, California (July 18, 2025) - Crestavilla, a Kisco Signature Community, recently hosted its annual summer marketplace, featuring handcrafted items made by members and other local vendors, with proceeds benefiting Homes for HOPE.

Crestavilla was proud to highlight Felicia Noriega, who contributed handcrafted necklaces, and Ivette Puente, heirloom life enrichment specialist at Crestavilla, who guided memory care members in making pet treats, key chains, and heartfelt cards.

Noriega, an 86-year-old member at Crestavilla, has loved making jewelry since childhood, a passion she inherited from her family. She became a licensed jeweler and now runs a jewelry-making program with her granddaughter. Since it started, they have raised more than $10,000 for St. Jude Childrens Hospital. Every Saturday, she teaches a jewelry-making class at Crestavilla.

Making jewelry isnt easy," said Noriega. "It takes real skill and creativity. You need a clear idea and a plan for what you want to create. I love teaching other members and inspiring them to design their own pieces.

Ivette Puente supported around 15 memory care members in creating homemade items, including dog and cat treats, hand-stitched keychains and crafted cards. She enjoyed collaborating with each member, finding ways for them to get involved and contribute in their own way.

Members were excited to contribute to this years marketplace," said Puente. "They feel empowered, like they were making a real difference. It gave them a sense of purpose and connection, like they were part of something bigger than themselves.

Ivette is great at creating meaningful experiences for our memory care members, said Francis Cruz, life enrichment director at Crestavilla. She offered them choices, helping them feel heard and allowing them to do what they enjoyed- making them more eager to participate.

Bombshell Study Finds Cyberbullying Leads to PTSD-Like Symptoms in Youth

June is National PTSD Month, making it a great time to spotlight this mental health condition. While many are familiar with adults who suffer from the condition, there is a new eye-opening research study reporting that youth who experience cyberbullying can end up with PTSD-like symptoms. Considering the widespread issue that cyberbullying is, this is something everyone should be aware of so they can help prevent and address it.

"We all know that cyberbullying is a problem, but we likely didnt realize just how damaging it is until this study put things into perspective, says Kirk Smalley, co-founder of Stand for the Silent. "This is alarming and needs to be addressed immediately.

The study, published in the May 2025 issue of the journal BMC Public Health, analyzed data collected from nearly 2,700 students in US middle and high schools. The students were all English-speaking and ranged in age from 13 to 17. The nationally represented sample inquired about the impact that cyberbullying has on the nations youth.

The researchers reported finding a strong positive relationship between PTSD symptoms in those who have experience with cyberbullying. They report that exclusion and rejection are as harmful as overt threats in terms of inducing trauma and that gossip and malicious comments are as detrimental as targeting someone based on their identity.

They report that trauma results from "an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual's functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being." Cyberbullying, they report, is strongly and consistently linked with poor outcomes later in life. Those who are subjected to bullying often experience anxiety, depression, mental disorders, emotional and psychological struggles, physical health problems, and academic issues. Bullying victims also have more suicidal ideation.

Considering the large number of our youth with access to social media and the means to be cyberbullied, this is a serious issue that has a vast impact. According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), social media plays a significant role in teen life today, and 90% of teens ages 13-17 use social media. They report that teens are online almost nine hours daily, not including homework time.

AACAP points out that social media is not all bad, as there are some benefits, such as staying connected to friends, meeting new people with shared interests, sharing work and music, and expressing oneself. However, the potential risks are real, and people must know them. In today's world, being online is not something that will go away or that parents can completely shield their kids from. We have to take steps to provide them with guidelines that will help keep them safer, and those who work around youth should be aware of the issue and how to prevent and address it.

Some guidelines to keep in mind when it comes to youth and cyberbullying:

Have age-appropriate discussions about the dangers and how they can protect themselves. Young people should know not to share personal information, exercise caution about what they follow and are exposed to, and how to identify risky things, including scams.
Establishing some rules about when its okay to use their devices is always a good idea. There are times and places when its acceptable and times when the device needs to be put away so that it doesnt take someones attention that should be given elsewhere.
Adults need to lead by example when going online and using social media. Millions of adults bully and belittle others online daily, which sets the example for youth. Be the example of how kids should be online and when devices should be used.
Teach youth healthy boundaries regarding social media, texting, and using cyber technology. Discuss why they must avoid certain things online and the importance of not participating in cyberbullying.
Parents can monitor their teens' online activities to see what they share and who they follow. They can also limit which apps they can download and use, which will help establish boundaries.
Discuss with youth what they should do if they encounter cyberbullying, and get them help if they have been cyberbullied. Addressing the issue right away will go a long way toward helping them process it more healthily.
Those who work with youth can help teach them about dangers and risks and how to protect themselves. They can also step in when an issue arises and ensure that it is addressed properly.

Simply saying you will not let your kids go online or use social media isnt the answer, added Smalley. We have to raise awareness about the issue, and all work together to help address the issue. Addressing this as a community is the only way it will protect our youth."

The Grassroots Project to Host Benefit Concert for Those Affected by LA Fires

Many people in the Los Angeles area and around the country watched in horror as fires swept through entire neighborhoods in January 2025. Those who have been looking for a way to help those affected by the fires are invited to attend and support a benefit concert this Saturday: Newport Rocks for LA, being held on March 8, 2025, from 6-10pm at the historic Balboa Harborside Pavilion at 400 Main Street in Newport Beach, California. Even those unable to attend can support the event in various ways.

Seeing what happened in the LA fires struck a chord with me, and I felt I had to do something to help," said Newport Beach resident Marmar Salimian, who has started The Grassroots Project in an effort to provide fire relief. "We have helped numerous individuals and families already and are ready to expand that reach. This benefit concert is the next step in that journey, and we look forward to the help it will provide to families affected by the LA fires."

To help bring the concert to life, Salimian partnered with Lorie Swatsek, founder of OC Media and Events, and The Soul Points Fund - a Los Angeles based nonprofit established by actor/filmmaker Mark Duplass and his wife, actor/filmmaker Katie Aselton. The Soul Points Fund provides direct on the ground support for those in need.

The live concert will feature Flashback Heart Attack and The Finz. The event is being organized by a group of volunteers brought together by The Grassroots Project and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to The Soul Points Fund which provides relief for vetted families and small organizations who desperately need help following the devastation of the LA fires.
