Founded in 2004 with a dual mission to give musicians in the City of Dallas a place to play quality music in a full orchestra setting and to enrich patrons of North Texas by sharing the music of musicians who perform simply for the love of playing the music, the New Texas Symphony Orchestra presents the second concert in their eighteenth season, RENEWAL. REVOLUTION showcases music, composers, and organizations who have led the way in adapting and transforming to their circumstances and who also inspire change in others through their revolutionary approaches.
Three works lead our charge: Camille Saint-Saëns’ Suite algérienne, Op. 60, Conni Ellisor’s Diaspora, and Beethoven’s celebrated Symphony No. 5 in C minor.
Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was a virtuoso musician who excelled as a composer, performer, and conductor in most every music genre. He was a child prodigy whom some considered more gifted than Mozart. Often referred to as the “French Beethoven,” Saint-Saëns’ early music was considered revolutionary, and he was one of the first Neoclassicists in the music world, which put him at odds with the new avant-garde approaches that were taking the lead in the early twentieth century. His Suite algérienne reflects one of Saint-Saëns’ many interests outside of music, world travel. Algiers was one of his favorite destinations and this work conjures images of the sea, a quiet evening in a fortress near Algiers, and an elaborate tribute to the sense of joy and security the composer felt about French military.
Conni Ellisor is a critically acclaimed contemporary American composer, educator, and jazz recording artist, who is known to take materials from a wide variety of non-classical traditions and bring them together with symphonic traditions that have stood the test of time. Her work, Diaspora, is a shining example of this, as she incorporates the vibrant rhythms and complex harmonies of West Africa and Haitian folk music and weaves them into the rich musical pallet of the symphony orchestra. Encore! of Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT), Nycole Ray, Artistic Director, will be our featured performers for this work, introducing brand new choreography. DBDT is the oldest, continuously operating professional dance company in Dallas, and has set the bar over and over for their innovative approach to dance and to the communities they serve.
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a German composer and pianist and is respected as the transitional composer who moved musical thought from the Classical to the Romantic Periods. His Fifth Symphony is especially revered as a favorite of musical repertoire, even today. Beethoven began composing this work in 1804, three years after he discovered he was losing his hearing. Beethoven himself wrote of the personal meaning of the opening four note sequence as “Fate” when it “knocks at the door.” The shifting moods and emotions of this piece are representative of Beethoven’s heroic struggle in dealing with the inevitable.
The New Texas Symphony Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that believes that access to quality symphonic is for everyone and supports this mission through our Free Concerts for All initiative.
